Main Chess Page
· What – World Open, National Chess Congress, Liberty Bell – Multi-day slow tournaments with high entry fees and very large prizes. About 1,500 play annually at the World Open with $180,000 in prizes! (I have nothing to do with the organization of these CCA events)
· Where – Sheraton Hotel, 17th and the Parkway, Philadelphia. (except World Open 2007 in Valley Forge)
· When – July 4 week (World Open), Thanksgiving Weekend
(National Congress), Martin Luther King Weekend in January (Liberty Bell) –
Many different playing schedules within each tournament are available.
· Who – In Multiple Sections by rating; World Open has many
less expensive side events at faster time limits. The National Chess
Congress has main sections with rating limits as low as "Under-600".
· What – Small prize 2-Sections (& the huge State Scholastic Chess Championship at Carlisle March 204 2007 - in 2005 it had ~700 entrants in all sections)
· Where – smaller: Philadelphia Community College – 17th and Spring Garden, Philadelphia - larger ones at Carlisle and the State Championship, which rotates around the state. The PA Senior Championship (age 50+) is held in various places; e.g. Haverford Sep 10-11, 2005.
· When – For the ones at Philadelphia Community College: About 1 Saturday a month from Sept thru April - registration ends 9:30; rounds start at 10 AM
· Who – A scholastic section (K-12) and an open section (primarily better scholastic players and adults). PSCF State Scholastic Coordinator Steve McLaughlin and I run the Delaware Valley Scholastic Grand Prix Rules and Prizes (see below).
· What – Big, scholastic-only events with lots of trophies and ribbons - The 2004 event had 209! entries with 75 individual and team trophies! Held as two events at one place at one time. Sponsored by Main Line Speech Consultants, PSCF, Lower Merion HS, and M&T Bank.
· Where – 2006: The MS/HS was at the Lower Merion High School
on Montgomery Ave. in Ardmore. The Gr Philadelphia Elementary was in NE
Philadelphia, also in November.
· When – Usually one each year in the Fall, usually
November – registration ends 9:30; rounds start at 10 AM. You must
register in advance to avoid a first round bye (see web page for details). And
your registration with all full information and correct fees must be received
about 10 days in advance to qualify for a discounted entry fee.
· Who – K-12, 6 Sections: Primary (K-3), Elementary (K-5) Championship, K-5 U700; Middle School (K-8), High School Under 1100, and High School (K-12) - Call Dan at 610-649-0750 for info. Each year this determines the Elementary, Middle School, and High School area champions for both individuals and team!
· What - A medium-entry and prize ($1000 first guaranteed! - $~4,700 prizes in all) tournament in a great setting. About 100 played in 2006.· Where - Dining Center, Haverford College, Haverford, PA. A 15 minute walk from either the Haverford (SEPTA R-5) train station or the "Haverford" stop of the Route 100 Train Station.
· When - For 2007, Apr 20-22.
· Who - For all ages. We have a U1800 section and a U1400 section for players of all levels.
· What – Scholastic only event with lots of trophies. These are part of the Delaware Valley Scholastic Grand Prix events.
· Where – Steve McLaughlin has started running tournaments in Wyncote. There are also tournaments played at the club on a weekend afternoon. A recent event was at Lower Moreland Library.
· When – Every couple of months; Registration ends 9:30;
rounds start at 10 AM
· Who – K-12, but multiple sections to meet the needs of
the all different ages and strengths
· What – Scholastic only event with lots of trophies. These are part of the Delaware Valley Scholastic Grand Prix events.
· Where – At the JCC in Wynnewood, Philadelphia Community College, Lower Moreland Library, Warminster, Southampton, or the Abrams Hebrew Academy in Yardley
· When – Every month or so; Registration ends 9:30; rounds start at 10 AM
· Who – K-12, two sections to meet the needs of the different ages and strengths
· What – Weekly (or monthly) tournaments held for club members (monthly tournaments may be open to all) The North Penn Chess Club in Landsdale hosts a monthly tournament, usually the third Saturday of the month at the St. John’s United Church of Christ at Rt. 63 and Richardson, as does the Allentown Chess Club. Bensalem hosted monthly quads, which are tournaments broken into groups of four by rating. MasterMinds CC and many more clubs on the Club Page.

holds quarterly "Quads" and weekly rated games on
